New Zealand's Green List is a register of high-demand occupations the country actively needs. If your job is on it, you can access priority work visas and — for many roles — a faster, more certain path to residence.

Two tiers: how the Green List works

The Green List sits in two tiers, and which one your role falls under decides how quickly you can settle:

  • Tier 1 — Straight to Residence. Selected high-skill roles let you apply for residence directly, often without first spending years on a work visa.
  • Tier 2 — Work to Residence. Other in-demand roles let you work in New Zealand and then apply for residence after a set period in that job.

Which jobs are on it?

The Green List focuses on roles New Zealand is short of — including healthcare and nursing, engineering, construction and trades, ICT and technology, science, and teaching. The list is reviewed regularly, so occupations are added and updated over time. The best first step is to check whether your specific role and qualifications match a listed occupation.
