Skilled Migrant Category: two new residence pathways from August 2026

Two fresh routes to permanent residence — and friendlier wage rules — are coming for skilled migrants in New Zealand.

From 24 August 2026, Immigration New Zealand is opening two brand-new routes to permanent residence under the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) — and softening the wage rules that have long tripped up applicants.

Two new pathways to residence

The reforms are designed to help employers keep the skilled people they have already trained, and to support long-term economic growth. In practice, they give migrants two clearer ways to qualify:

  • Skilled work experience pathway — for people in skilled roles with at least five years of directly relevant experience, including two years worked in New Zealand earning a minimum of 1.1 times the median wage.
  • Trades and technician pathway — for specified trades or technician roles, requiring a relevant Level 4 (or higher) qualification plus at least four years of post-qualification experience, including 18 months in New Zealand paid at or above the median wage.

Simpler, fairer wage rules

Perhaps the most welcome change is how wages are assessed. Going forward, applicants only need to meet the median wage that applies to their chosen pathway at the time they begin gaining their skilled work experience — and then keep earning at least that level. The old trap of having to suddenly meet a higher wage threshold at the moment of applying for residence is being removed.

What this means for you

If you are on a work visa and building experience in New Zealand, these pathways can turn your time here into a clear route to residence. The key is to plan early and track your qualification, wage and experience against the right pathway from day one.
